My ledger might be tampered or comperimised even after ordering it from the official website.

So i had bought ledger device for storing my crypto off of an exchange from the official website, to my surprise the seal of the box had been broken and i saw fingerprints on my ledger device, i immediately contacted the shipping service dhl to ask them on how this happened. Turns out the customs have the full rights to open any package for investagatin purpose, since its a security device it shouldn’t be opened by anyone else, they even have good technology to scan and examine it externally but still they opened up the seal to check inside and i do not trust to send any Crypto assets to my ledger device because as far as i know it might be tampered with or has been compromised, i can just assume that it hasn’t and simple have to trust my goverment that they didn’t do anything to my device. What do you think? Can they have so much authority to mess with the citizens privacy? They can simply break open the seal of a security device like ledger?

  1. contact ledger and see what they can do, customs open packs randomly so it’s unlikely they will open another one, or get one from authorized reseller

  2. Send it back, regardless of if it was customs. Send it back and get a new one, make up an excuse if needed, just get a new one, it isn’t worth the hassle. I read a story on Reddit before of how someone bought a used one from eBay but “factory reset it” as such and it was still recovered by the previous owner, get that shit out and get a new one.

  3. You can send back to ledger (have to pay postage) to and then but a new one. I’d do this regardless of assurances.

I know because I did this.

  5. 99% should be fine, the ledger software also tries detects if some fishy was done with the hardware.

However, we don’t buy a hardware wallet for 99% security, I would contact them and ask for a new one.

  6. Do not use it at all! Even on the Ledger site it tells you not too. Start the return/exchange process and get a new (sealed) one.

  7. I would have to assume that the ledger integrity has been compromised.

I doubt customs would have tampered with it in such a way?

Sucks ass but it’s always better being safe than sorry. Especially if you have a considerable amount of crypto.

Edit: Customs use gloves so to find fingerprints is concerning.

  8. If you are going to be paranoid about it, how much effort (the russians, chinese, etc) would it be to get an insider into the factory that manufactures the devices.

    scary stuff, eh.

  9. Damn, bet that was disappointing.

Best case was a customs agent dicking with you deliberately.

Worse case something dodgy done to it.

See if Ledger will take a return as you ordered direct from them.

  10. Send it back. Never ever use a device that has the tampered seals broken or peeled up. Trust me. You don’t want to build a nest egg or get a nice profit and some bozo at DHL steals it all away from you.

  13. of course customs can do that, are you this stupid? Jesus Christ. Otherwise we can just start shipping bricks of cocaine and laundered cash in ledger boxes.
